The announcement came directly from Interim U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, Alina Habba , during an appearance on Fox News. Habba, a recent appointee of President Donald Trump and a former member of his legal team, stated:
“I have instructed my office today to open an investigation into Governor Murphy and Attorney General Platkin.”
The Immigrant Trust Directive, still in effect and previously upheld by the courts, prohibits state and local police from inquiring about immigration status or cooperating with ICE in most circumstances.
Murphy and Platkin Respond
In response, Governor Murphy defended the directive, calling it a necessary measure to ensure community safety:
“We’re not in the immigration business. If we need to work with federal immigration authorities, we absolutely do,” Murphy said in an interview on the MeidasTouch podcast.
Attorney General Platkin also pushed back on the probe, noting that the directive was upheld by the Third Circuit Court of Appeals in 2021. He stated:
“I don’t typically launch investigations on cable news networks. I’m focused on doing my job, which is to keep the residents of our state safe.”
